Bill 64, European-Style Data Privacy and BILL C-11
On June 12, 2020, the Quebec government introduced Bill 64 - An Act to Modernize Legislative Provisions Respecting the Protection of Personal Information. Then Canada followed with BILL C-11 in November 2020.
Compared to the new BILL C-11, the Canadian-level data privacy protection law proposal, Bill 64 was probably the one that was ahead of the game . In fact, both are closer to the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (2018), cementing our sense that GDPR was becoming a gold standard in terms of privacy protection.
We estimate that it will come into effect around September 2021.
